Connewarre Anzac

Conne-McDonald JA 2145John Alex McDonald was a farmer from Connewarre. John and his brother Norman enlisted at the start of the war, and were among the first local lads to do so. John arrived at Gallipoli on the 5th April 1915 and only one month later on May 8th was killed in action while attempting to hold back the Turks. In 1920 his body was found in a Turkish cemetery and was moved to the Lone Pine Cemetery at Gallipoli. In 1916 a younger brother, Austin enlisted and became the third son of Donald and Catherine McDonald to serve his country.
